My Favorite North Park, San Diego Eats and Drinks

Each San Diego community has something to love, but North Park has my heart.

When looking to move to San Diego, the choices of where to land can seem endless. But for a twenty-something young professional who doesn’t bar-hop quite like she used to- North Park has everything I could want.

North Park is centrally located in San Diego- with most houses being about 10 minutes away from the zoo, 15 minutes to Gaslamp District, and 20 minutes from Coronado Beach. It’s a beautiful little nook that has all of the hiking trails, parks, and breweries you could imagine. In a beautiful and vibrant community like this, we are lucky to have pretty much everything - and a lot of it. Let’s break down my North Park musts so that you can make the most of your visit- or move- to this fabulous nook of San Diego.

Breweries and Bars Aplenty

One of the coolest parts of North Park living is the seemingly endless amount of bars and breweries at your beck and call. Whether you’re a hazy ipa connoisseur or a mezcal marg aficionado - North Park will quench your thirst. Thorn Brewery is one of the OG’s and has a bit of everything. Their Barrio Lager is an idea light beer made for sunny days and is best paired with a Tajin rim but their unique smoothie sours and IPA’s mean there is something for everyone. My favorite beer in all of North Park, though, can be found at North Park Beer Co. While this brewery is pretty heavy on the IPA’s - the Golden Phoenix is a true gem. This golden stout is creamy and tasty with an undeniable coffee flavor and a nitro finish. Truly an award winning beer.

Now when it comes to cocktails- you won’t have a shortage of options. If you’re looking for a sultry ambiance and have an affinity for whiskey, Seven Grand is a must. Let it be known that I am not a whiskey gal, but even I have found a couple drinks I love. May I recommend the Southpaw, a refreshing cocktail made with Seven Grand Irish Whiskey Blend, fresh citrus, simple syrup, cucumber, and mint or a simple mint julep. If you’re someone with an affinity for tiki drinks and clever concoctions- Polite Provisions is the spot for you. You can’t go wrong with any item on their menu, but the GPK made with 3 types of rum, passionfruit, coconut, and lime is where my heart lies. If you’re looking for a night out but also wanting to connect with your inner-child, Coin-Op will be right up your alley. With a selection of the best arcade games and my favorite mezcal marg in all of North Park- I can’t get enough of this spot.

For my non-drinkers that still like to socialize and hang in a vibey neighborhood, you must check out Gather Coffee & Kava Bar. There is no alcohol on the menu, just a plethora of feel good kava and lattes, which make this spot ideal for a night out or a place to finish some work.

The Coolest Coffee Shops

On any given corner in North Park, you will likely find a coffee shop tucked away. Each has a unique experience and probably a list of lattes you never could have even imagined. The star of the show in North Park is definitely Holsem Coffee. Seriously, the first time I saw their menu I gasped because it was just that good. The Strawberry Malt Latte, Lemon Meringue Cold Brew, and Banana Bread Latte are just a few of their insane creations. Subterranean Coffee is another local gem- who has absolutely perfected the lavender oat milk latte.

The Best Food in North Park

A list that is impossible to keep short- but I’m going to try.

If you’re looking for a greasy burger that hits that fast food craving just right, may I introduce you to The Friendly. This spot has one burger on the menu and it’s so good. Healthy? Hell no. But cheesy, saucy, and addicting for sure. For my ramen fanatics, Underbelly will challenge everything you think you know about ramen. The Belly of the Beast is my fave- but no matter what you go with: get the oxtail dumplings.

Italian food in San Diego could have a whole post in itself, but when it comes to North Park’s hard-hitters, Cori Pasta and Alexander’s have everything you will need. The Short Rib risotto at Cori Pasta is last-meal worthy, and the pizza menu at Alexander’s will ensure that you are never satisfied with Domino’s again.

Should You Move Here?
